Dokkens in Madang PNG

We arrived at the training center in Madang.  It is absolutely beautiful here!  One of these pictures is the sunrise from the center which is up on a mountain side.

Hello from PNG!

We arrived in PNG this afternoon. Everything went smoothly. We're spending the night at Mapang Guest House - we had dinner with the other guests and it was delicious! Jessica still has a cough but it's not hindering her from having fun. It's hot here! Michael looked at Daniel and said "You've got something running down your face" Uh Michael - that's sweat.

Treetops

We met a young couple staying at the Treetops lodge here in Cairns yesterday. They had just come back from visiting his parents in PNG. His family had grown up in PNG and he said it was a great experience for him and he wouldn't trade it for anything. His family has been working on a Bible translation since 1989. They are planning on becoming translators and it was encouraging to hear that he and his wife have chosen to follow in his parents' footsteps.

Trip to Downtown Cairns

It is such a blessing to be here in Australia. Even so we have been feeling displaced - in between two phases of life and two countries. It's a strange time of transition.

Yesterday was a special day of fun for our family - a time to really enjoy the unique city life of Cairns. We took a bus to the city center. Along the waterfront there was a long boardwalk. There were trees full of songbirds and bright, exotic flowers. The public pool was unlike anything I've ever seen and so beautiful. The kids played at our all-time favorite playground. It was so beautiful with mosaics and colorful sculptures. Little fountains of water randomly spurt up with colored lights behind. There was an international market with a food court serving a wide variety of foods (where did our kids eat? McDonalds!)

Sunday we fly to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea where we'll spend one night before flying to Madang to the training center. We're a little nervous - the word is that training is a cross between Survivor and The Biggest Loser! : o We really appreciate your prayers for us during this time of transition.

Cairns

We arrived in Cairns for a week vacation. It has been good for us to unwind and adjust to the time change. Our friends Gary and Helen are letting us stay in their house on Holloway beach in Cairns for a week. We have been having a good time here. This morning 3 out of our 4 kids were up at 4:30 this morning ready to go. Today we ventured to a shopping center via the bus. Here are pictures from our adventure. There are lots of differences between Australia and the US.

New friends in New Zealand

We had a 13 hour layover in Auckland New Zealand and we had contacted Wycliffe in NZ to see if there was anybody who could meet us. They hooked us up with Tim and Fiona Taylor who have 6 children. They picked us up at the airport with jackets for all of us (it is there winter there and it was 5 degrees C) and took us to their place. We are so thankful for getting to know their family and that we didn't have to spend all that time in the airport.

Getting there

We are almost there! We left Seatac Friday at 3 pm and are now in Auckland New Zealand. We have a 13 hour layover here and a Wycliffe family offered to pick us up at the airport and let us hang out at there house. We all had a laugh when I tried to get in the drivers side of their van.
Here is a picture of us at LAX during our 4 hour layover. The kids did great on the flight and it went very smoothly.

We flew a 747 from LAX to Aukland, New Zealand. The kids loved the video console built into every seat. They could watch movies, listen to music and play video games.

Going away party

The neighbors on our culdesac had a going away party for us Saturday.
We set up chairs and barbeques in the middle of the street and ate and visited
Then it started to pour and we had to move into the garage
The kids watched a video in the neighbors basement and we counted 20 kids!

Boxes

We borrowed the cargo truck from our church to take our boxes downtown Seattle to have them shipped to PNG Tuesday.
The kids really got into loading the truck.
Here are our boxes containing clothes, shoes and things we might need for the next 4 years in PNG.
