Encounter

Last week was Encounter, a cross between church summer camp and a spiritual retreat.  Daniel, Rachel and I attended.  We stayed at the training centre because there was some danger on the road to the camp in Goroka where we were going to stay.  A friend and I lead a Bible study of 9th grade boys so I was invited to come along as a sponsor.

Some of the highlights were four kids decided they wanted to be baptized, so Sunday afternoon we met at the river and their fathers were called to come and baptize them.  What a privilege.  We played lots of fun outside games like Buck Buck (Bill Cosby did a stand-up routine about this game, which is banned by most youth groups now) , can can, and a talent show.

We also went on a hike off centre with about 15 kids to a swimming hole in a river.  We had a great time and swam for about 2 hours.  Unfortunately, on our way back myself and another leader were behind the rest of the group with 2 teen boys when 5 young men robbed us.  They took some shoes, a back pack and one of the teen’s phones.  We are thankful that no one was hurt.
